One of our two new specialties, Orofacial Pain, is sharing their belief that occlusion does not cause Temporo-Mandibular disorders. They have a belief, and since the American Academy of Orofacial Pain is the sponsoring organization of the specialty, it is their responsibility to create the definitions and manage communication of research and standards for the discipline. As a member of the AAOP for many years, and as a general practitioner, I was and am very interested in understanding and implementing systems, processes, and protocols to design an exceptional working relationship between myself and our newest specialists. My dilemma was that I had noticed when I changes to the occlusion for some people who were experiencing pain stopped the pain. I had to wonder what I was treating with my therapy, so I set out to bridge the gap. I spoke with many specialists, I re-read a lot of things I had read before, I read a lot of things I had not, and I came to some conclusions. I look forward to sharing what I learned with you.
